Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Fans

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a decisive win.

“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”

Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”

League Context for Proprietor Fines

This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent examples involve:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty manageable for the billionaire owner.

Recent Controversies and Media Attention

The incident follows a contentious preseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his role in building the Cowboys into the world’s most valuable athletic organization, despite its recent championship drought.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its ongoing effort to uphold professional conduct among all franchise representatives, regardless of their status or wealth.
